Care and Protection of Wood Furniture

To protect and properly care for your wood furniture, we recommend Guardsman Fine Furniture Care Products.

We also recommend the following helpful tips:

  • Avoid placing furniture under windows or in direct sunlight, as sunlight can cause fading of wood.

  • Avoid dramatic changes in temperature where furniture is located by placing furniture away from radiators, heat, air vents and air conditioning ducts.

  • Do not place plastic or rubber materials (lamp bases, notebooks, placemats, etc.) on your furniture, as some plastics contain ingredients that can damage the wood finish.

  • Rotate accessories on your furniture from time to time so they do not sit in the same spot all the time, also helping to avoid fading.

  • Use pads, cloth or felt to protect furniture from plastic or rubber, as well as hot dishes, beverages, and any objects that might contain water.
Care and Protection of Wood Furniture
  • Clean up spills immediately using a blotting action (not a wiping action). Water left on the surface of wood furniture can cause white spots in the finish. Alcohol, perfume, after-shave and medications can also damage wood finishes.

  • Lift and place objects rather than dragging them across the wooden furniture surface.

Leather Care and Cleaning

Leather is a natural product, so it needs very little care during normal use. However, try to keep these helpful tips in mind for the proper care and cleaning of your leather furniture:

  • Maintain a minimum of two feet between your furniture and any heating source. Prolonged exposure to heat vents or radiators can cause leather to dry out.

  • Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight to prevent fading.

  • Like most items in your home, leather furniture will collect dust. For easy dust removal, sprinkle a small amount of leather cleaner on a cloth, dampen, and dust gently. This may be performed regularly, as needed.

  • Blot excess liquid immediately with a clean absorbent cloth or sponge. If necessary, use clear, lukewarm water and gently wipe the spill. Dry the area with a clean towel and allow to air dry.

  • For stubborn spills and stains, use a mild solution of Ivory soap and clear, lukewarm water. Apply the soap to a clean, wet sponge, rubbing gently. Rinse well and let the affected area air dry naturally. Always clean in a hidden area first to be sure leather discoloration will not result.
Leather Care and Cleaning
  • Wipe excess butter, oil, or grease off leather with a clean, dry cloth. Leave it alone for a while, as the spot should dissipate into the leather in a short period of time. Never use water to clean butter, oil, or grease stains.

  • Never use saddle soap, abrasive cleansers, furniture polish, oil, varnish, or ammonia water on leather furniture. The leather has already been permanently preserved and needs no other maintenance than simple cleaning, as recommended above.

Upholstery Cleaning

Want to keep your upholstered furniture looking fresh and vibrant? Try these helpful tips:

  • Vacuum your upholstered furniture with a soft brush weekly. It is important to vacuum the cushions and backs every week. Use a soft brush to remove loose soil.

  • Remove all liquids and soils immediately; dab or vacuum to remove.

  • Keep foods, pets, and dirty objects off furniture as much as possible.

  • Use cool water for non-greasy soil on your upholstered furniture. Heat sets most stains, but you will need warm or hot water to remove greasy stains on your upholstered furniture -- use it sparingly.

  • Apply a 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution, dabbed on the stain; do not rinse. Repeat until the stain is gone. Always test in an inconspicuous area to ensure surface will not be damaged.
Upholstery Cleaning
  • Treat your upholstered furniture with a stain repellant to help avoid troubles later; re-apply as recommended by product manufacturer. Always test in an inconspicuous area to ensure surface will not be damaged.
