Helpful Tips On Removing Wax From Furniture, Carpet, Wood & More
From Your Friends At Fenker’s Furniture
With the holidays fast approaching, we thought some timely help might be in order, in the event you have this sort of accident in your home this holiday season….
A candle is knocked over, and you have wax all over the carpet, tablecloth, table and even the dog. What do you do?
Carpet
A gentle method uses a warm iron and a brown paper bag. Soften the wax with a hair dryer and get as much out using your fingers as possible OR fill a Zip-lock bag with ice (or a metal pan with ice) and lay it on top of the wax until it hardens. Then, break and scrape off as much of the wax as you can. Keep refreezing it as it gets soft. Brush with a soft bristly brush until no more wax particles come off. Heat the iron on its lowest setting, unplug and allow to cool, then cover the wax with the brown paper and iron over it briefly. Be VERY CAREFUL with synthetic carpet because you can easily scorch or melt the carpet. The wax should melt a little and transfer to the paper like a grease spot. Remember to move the sheet of paper often so the iron doesn’t get too waxy. I have also read where people used wax paper, cloth diapers, newspaper, and paper towels in place of parcel paper. If you are left with a greasy residue, use a carpet cleaner.
Fabric
Use the same methods as above when you get wax on fabric or upholstered furniture — or actually put the object in the freezer to harden the wax, then chip the wax away.
Wood
Use a hair dryer and a credit card to scrape the wax off of wood, wood furniture, or wooden chairs.
Dog or Cat
Work peanut butter or Pam spray into fur (recommended by a vet) OR use olive oil in a spritzer and comb through with a fine-toothed comb.
